At just 16 years old, Stormy Montana (yes that is her real name) has proven to have one of the largest and most dedicated fan bases in all of country music. She doesn’t attribute this simply to her age, but to the music itself, which is grounded in the best traditions of country music, with an eye towards the more accessible pop country of today’s generation. Stormy began singing live in bars and honky-tonks at 9 years old and hasn’t stopped since. Her love of music and performing is evident by the fact her mother never had to push her to sing and perform, it’s simply what she wanted to do. Teaming with renound vocal coach Teresa Smith, and surrounding herself with a great team of Nashville insiders and music professionals, Stormy set sail on her life’s calling. The culmination of these early years of hard work can be heard on her new C.D. “Someone Like Me” which has already sold nearly 7,000 physical copies without the benefit of radio play, video channel support, or a 'Big Machine' behind her.
When Stormy released her debut record "Someone Like Me" late last year, she sold nearly 2,000 copies on the first night, making her one of only a handful of artist in the country to outsell some of the biggest names in the music industry. In fact, "Someone Like Me" sold more in one night than many 'top-tier' artist sold that entire week. As Chet Flippo wrote in Nashville Skyline, "Below Simpson’s 65K number, only four other country CDs sold as many as 10,000 copies. Only another 15 sold as many as 5,000. And, sadly, the bottom 16 sold less than 1,000 copies each.”
With the rise of online piracy, shrinking shelf space in stores, and the state of the economy, it seems unlikely that an independent country artist could sell thousands of c.d.'s on her own; without the benefit of radio play, video channel support, or a large team of music insiders behind her - but that's exactly what Stormy Montana has done.
Even more impressive, "Someone Like Me" has continued to sell well throughout the year. Nearly 7,000 physical copies have already been sold since release (not even Taylor Swift can say that at this age!). And "Someone Like Me" has never been sold online. Until now.
On November 15, 2009 Stormy Montana will release "Someone Like Me" worldwide through i-Tunes, Amazon, LaLa, Rhapsody, Napster, and other online vendors.
Stormy says, “At first we wanted to keep the C.D. offline completely, believing that the best way to sell "Someone Like Me" was for me to play shows, shake hands, and meet as many people as possible. As time moved on we found that the demand for "Someone Like Me" at the shows was overwhelming, leading us to sell out very quickly. At the same time, everyday we were getting request for the C.D. from places as far away as Japan and Germany. We concluded we needed to have "Someone Like Me" in all the online stores so that the fans who weren’t able to purchase the C.D. at the shows, and those around the world, could.”
